Chery Malaysia has introduced plug-in hybrid versions of its Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 SUVs, both using the brand’s Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) system.

The move adds two electrified options to its local line-up. Chery current does not sell fully electric vehicles in Malaysia.

Priced at RM129,800 for the Tiggo 7 PHEV and RM159,800 for the seven-seat Tiggo 8 PHEV (on-the-road without insurance), the pair are positioned as front-wheel-drive models assembled for Malaysia with a long driving range pitch.

Both were launched after earlier previews and a short pre-booking window.

Core hardware is shared.

The CSH set-up combines a fifth-generation 1.5-litre ACTECO TGDi engine with a dual-motor Dedicated Hybrid Transmission and an 18.3 kWh LFP battery.

Chery quotes up to 90km of electric-only range and as much as 1,200 km combined range on a full tank and full charge.

DC charging at 40 kW takes the battery from 30% to 80% in a claimed 19 minutes; AC charging is rated at 6.6 kW and achieves the same range in 3 hours via a standard 3-pin charger. A full charge overnight takes 8.5 hours.

Vehicle-to-Load at 3.3 kW is supported.

Both models’ powertrains boast 275 PS/271hp combined.

Battery protection is an important feature in the SUVs.

The Guardian Battery Safety System includes an automatic high-voltage cut-off in an incident, IP68 dust- and water-resistant pack sealing, operation from -35°C to 60°C, stated durability up to 95°C, and a 500 mm wading capability — features positioned for Malaysia’s climate and flood-prone conditions.

Trim and tech differ by model.

The Tiggo 7 PHEV gets a 24.6-inch dual-screen cockpit (two 12.3-inch panels), an eight-speaker Sony audio system, and ventilated front seats.

The Tiggo 8 PHEV pairs a 10.25-inch cluster with a 15.6-inch central display and upgrades to 10 Sony speakers.

Both run on the Qualcomm 8155 platform with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Exterior changes versus petrol variants include new bumpers and lighting signatures; the Tiggo 8 adds flush door handles.

Active safety coverage is broad. Standard ADAS lists include AEB, ACC with traffic-jam assist, lane-keeping aids, blind-spot monitoring and 540° cameras.

Model-specific items include Multi-Collision Braking and Driver Monitoring on Tiggo 7, and Driver Fatigue Monitoring on Tiggo 8. Eight airbags and an integrated dashcam are available.

Aftersales terms mirror recent Chery launches: a seven-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, eight-year/160,000 km coverage for the battery, power motor and hybrid control unit, five years of free labour service, and a one-to-one battery exchange if state-of-health drops below 70% within the warranty period.

Colours at launch include Khaki White for both, with Phantom Grey and a Blood Stone Red/black roof option for Tiggo 7 (two-tone adds RM2,000).

The Tiggo 8 adds Aurora Green and Carbon Black to its palette.

By adding two PHEVs below RM160,000, Chery is targeting value-led electrified family SUVs, setting up direct competition with mainstream hybrid and plug-in rivals while leaning on range claims, fast-charge times and warranty assurance to ease first-time PHEV ownership.
