BYD’s Racco electric kei car is moving beyond Japan, with Sri Lanka and Macau becoming its first announced overseas markets.
The Racco was developed specifically around Japan’s kei-car regulations, but BYD’s authorised Sri Lankan distributor, John Keells CG Auto, initially said it was assessing whether the compact EV — or a version adapted for Sri Lanka — could fit its line-up.
Macau is also part of BYD’s expansion plan. Chinese media outlet IT Home reported that reservations have opened there, while a Sri Lankan launch event and the start of sales are scheduled for Oct 9.
The move is notable because the Racco was conceived primarily for Japan rather than as a conventional global BYD model.
BYD has said it is evaluating demand in other right-hand-drive markets, with the initial focus outside Japan on Sri Lanka and Macau.
In its Japanese specification, the Racco measures 3,395mm long and 1,475mm wide, with a height of 1,800mm. All three Japanese variants use a 47kW front motor producing 160Nm.
Two LFP battery sizes are offered in Japan: 22.4kWh for the Racco 200 and 35.84kWh for the Racco 300 Plus and 300 Premium. Official WLTC range is 210km and 320km respectively.
The tall-bodied four-seater also features electric sliding rear doors, reflecting the Racco’s focus on space efficiency and everyday usability in Japan.
Sri Lanka and Macau could now show whether that formula can travel beyond the market for which the Racco was designed.
