The Malaysian electric vehicle (EV) plates were introduced recently following the last Transport Ministry announcement in June.

EVs are still a tiny subset of cars on Malaysian roads but you would probably have seen a handful of them running around with such “EU-like” licence plates.

The Malaysian EV plate is the most advanced in the Asean region and it’s impressive for the number of advanced security features it has.

Such features prevent forgery and enhance safety, They include tamper-proof strips similar to those on the Malaysian currency.

It comes with uniquely designed alphanumeric characters that are difficult to alter. In addition, authentic seal stickers further enhance security.

Another remarkable innovation is that there is an embedded RFID chip in the front plate that uses the entire plate as an antenna, enabling strong signal transmission.

These features aim to combat the issue of illegal or modified plates, which has been a concern in the past.

For now, only buyers of new EVs and fuel cell electric vehicles are required to use such smart plates.

Existing EV owners can order the plates from Nov 9. The plates are made of aluminium with the advanced features derived from German technology.

YouTuber Daren Yoong has posted a new video (two actually) a few days ago on the subject and how the plate is made.

Yoong, who hails from Malaysia, is working in Singapore as a marketer for US-based AlphaSense, a market intelligence platform.

In his spare time, he runs a YouTube channel on electric cars and is a self-avowed Tesla investor and fan, who also dishes up investing opinions on his channel.
