Mercedes-AMG has added the GT 53 4-Door Coupé to its new electric performance range, pairing a maximum WLTP range of 809km with DC charging at up to 600kW.
The GT 53 sits below the GT 55 and GT 63 as the entry model, but it still delivers serious performance.
Two permanently excited synchronous motors produce 400kW and 800Nm, with 270kW available continuously. AMG quotes 0–100kph in 3.9 seconds from a standstill, or 3.5 seconds using a one-foot rollout.
Top speed is limited to 230kph, rising to 250kph with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.
A 106kWh usable battery operates on an 800-volt system. Preliminary WLTP range is 682km to 809km, depending on specification, while energy consumption is rated at 15.6–18.5kWh/100km.
At a suitable high-powered charger, the battery can be taken from 10% to 80% in about 11 minutes. Mercedes-AMG also claims that a 10-minute stop can add as much as 534km of WLTP range. AC charging is limited to 11kW.
The rear motor uses a two-speed transmission. Its short first ratio assists acceleration and urban running, while the taller second gear is intended to improve motorway efficiency. The front motor acts as a boost unit and disconnects under light loads to reduce energy use.
The five-door liftback measures 5,094mm long and rides on a 3,040mm wheelbase. Luggage capacity is 507 litres, supplemented by a 62-litre compartment beneath the bonnet. The roofline is 40mm lower than the previous GT 4-Door despite the battery beneath the floor.
AMG has also tried to give the electric GT 53 some of the character of its petrol predecessors. The AMGFORCE Sport+ programme adds simulated gear changes and a reproduced inline-six soundtrack based on the former AMG E 53 Coupé.
Engineers recorded the engine from 16 microphone positions and carried out more than 100 measurements. Drivers can trigger the virtual shifts through steering-wheel paddles.
A separate Response Control dial lets the driver alter accelerator response without changing the selected drive mode.
Standard hardware includes AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, air suspension and adaptive dampers. Active rear aerodynamics comprise a multi-position spoiler and an optional extending diffuser designed to reduce drag at higher speeds.
Inside, the GT 53 gets a 14-inch central display, individual rear seats and a segmented panoramic glass roof that can switch between transparent and opaque sections.
German sales begin on Aug 13, with prices from €115,430 (RM546,000).
