Malaysia plans to begin small-scale production of locally developed graphene-enhanced lithium-ion battery cells in July, according to Nikkei Asia.
NanoMalaysia chief executive officer Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad told the publication that the project cost about RM20 million.
Manufacturing will be handled by Gigafactory Malaysia, a wholly owned NanoMalaysia subsidiary. NanoMalaysia operates as a company limited by guarantee under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Production is planned at a 15,000 sq ft facility in Suria Industrial Park, Sepang. The company expects the plant to reach an annual capacity of 1MWh, equivalent to about 92,000 cells, as early as September 2026.
Gigafactory Malaysia has reportedly received an initial order for a 25kWh battery pack from an unnamed local organisation. NanoMalaysia is also considering exports to Indonesia, South Korea, India and Pakistan.
The cell uses nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry enhanced with graphene. NanoMalaysia’s Hydrogen–Electric Vehicle–Battery Technology centre already develops graphene-based lithium-ion pouch cells for EV and stationary-storage applications.
The company has associated the technology with greater energy storage and faster charging.
However, it has not disclosed a production vehicle, pack capacity, recognised driving cycle, charging power or detailed test conditions.
