Xiaomi has started recruiting an automotive government relations manager in Malaysia, but this does not confirm that its cars are coming here.

The Greater Kuala Lumpur position covers product compliance, customs matters, market-entry approvals and dealings with government agencies.

The manager would also advise Xiaomi on completely built-up imports and completely knocked-down production. Applications for investment incentives and import-duty exemptions form part of the role.

Relevant authorities named in the vacancy include the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, Malaysian Investment Development Authority, Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute,  the Customs Department and Road Transport Department.

The appointee would monitor policy changes, arrange meetings with officials and take charge when government-related problems arise.

The recruitment indicates that Xiaomi is examining the rules and costs involved in entering Malaysia. It does not establish whether the company favours importing cars, local assembly or both.

BitAuto Malaysia, the local edition of Chinese automotive platform Yiche, earlier reported on the Xiaomi Technology vacancy.

A review of the full job description also found responsibilities covering crisis response, negotiations with authorities and government-related risk assessment.

Xiaomi sells the SU7 electric saloon and YU7 electric SUV in China. The SU7 entered the market in March 2024, followed by the YU7 in June 2025. A new-generation SU7 arrived in March 2026.

Xiaomi has not named a Malaysian distributor, assembly partner or sales date. Neither the SU7 nor YU7 has been confirmed for this market.
