BYD is bringing plug-in hybrid power into Europe’s small-car heartland with the Dolphin G DM-i, a compact hatchback aimed at the B-segment.
The new model uses BYD’s Super Hybrid with DM technology, pairing electric-first driving with a petrol engine for longer trips. BYD claims more than 1,000km of combined range on a full battery and a full tank, which puts it closer to family-car territory than the usual urban supermini brief.
It is also the first BYD developed specifically for overseas markets, including Europe. At 4.16 m long and 1.825 m wide, the Dolphin G DM-i is still compact by family-car standards, but wide enough to promise better cabin space than many city-biased hatchbacks.
BYD executive vice-president Stella Li said the European B-segment is one of the market’s most important areas, and the Dolphin G DM-i is meant to bring long electric range, hybrid flexibility and digital features into a more accessible compact car.
The European launch is due in June, with customer deliveries to follow after that. BYD has not released full equipment levels or final technical specifications yet, so pricing, battery size and detailed electric-only range remain open for now.
For Europe, this could be a clever move: a small car with EV-style daily driving, but without asking buyers to rely fully on public charging.
