A Skoda electric SUV has lined up against 1980s supercar royalty, which sounds like the sort of pub talk that ends in a napkin sketch — until the Elroq vRS shows how much faster everyday EVs have become.
Skoda UK chose the Elroq vRS, its fastest-accelerating production model, and sent it down a drag strip against a Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary, Ferrari Testarossa and Porsche 944 Turbo.
Not bad company for a Skoda crossover.
The Elroq vRS has two electric motors, 340PS and 545Nm, so it does not need revs, clutch drama or a perfect launch. It just goes.
Skoda claims 0-100kph in 5.4 seconds. In the 1980s, that was bedroom-wall territory. Today, it comes in a five-seat SUV with a boot, an 82kWh gross battery and up to 554km of WLTP range.
The film is nostalgia bait with a charging port. Some of those poster cars had higher top speeds, and the Ferrari Testarossa was never exactly slow.
Over a longer run, the result might not flatter the Skoda as much. On a short drag strip, instant torque makes old heroes work harder.
Then the Elroq vRS drives home with five seats, up to 554km of WLTP range and a 10-80% DC charging time of around 29 minutes at up to 185kW.
The old supercars did not become slow overnight. Family EVs have simply become quick enough to make the comparison uncomfortable.
