Xiaomi has officially unveiled its new SkyNomad SUV series, opening a new chapter for its automotive business with a move into the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) segment.

The announcement was made through Xiaomi Auto’s official channels, with founder and chief executive Lei Jun describing the new line-up as being designed as a “second home” for families.

Unlike the SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV, which are battery-electric vehicles, the SkyNomad range will pair an electric drivetrain with a petrol engine that acts as a generator to extend driving range.

A regulatory filing from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has since confirmed the range will span four models: the N90 Max, the N90 Max Camping Edition, the N70, and the N70 Max.

All four use the same 1.5-litre petrol engine purely as a range extender, with the engine never driving the wheels directly.

Teaser images and videos published on the company’s official Weibo account have offered an early glimpse of what buyers can expect, with Xiaomi itself confirming the flagship model’s name as the SkyNomad N90.

One standout feature: when parked, the front seats spin a full 180 degrees, turning the cabin into a face-to-face lounge with the second row.

The seating arrangement fits Xiaomi’s positioning of the SkyNomad as a vehicle for family travel and outdoor lifestyles rather than simply another large SUV.

Other details from the MIIT filing point to a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor and multiple seating configurations across the range, with the Camping Edition adding a lifting roof, rooftop sleeping platform, and provision for a tent.

Full technical specifications, including battery suppliers and motor outputs, are expected to be detailed closer to the model’s official debut.

The SkyNomad series also marks Xiaomi’s first step into China’s fast-growing EREV market, where several domestic brands have found success by combining electric driving with the reassurance of long-distance capability.

Xiaomi has previously said it plans to expand its automotive business beyond China, although it has not confirmed when the SkyNomad series specifically could reach overseas markets.
