Google is giving Android Auto something new to do while the car is stopped: YouTube video playback.
For the first time on Android Auto, users would be able to watch videos through apps such as YouTube in 60fps full HD. It is for parked use only, including charging stops, not driving.
The rollout will begin later this year in supported cars from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata and Volvo. Not every car would get it straight away, and availability would depend on vehicle and app support.
Google has added a safety stop. Once the driver shifts out of Park, video playback switches to audio only in apps that support background audio. So a video podcast could continue playing through audio, but moving images would disappear from the car screen.
YouTube is only one part of the update. Android Auto is also getting a refreshed interface with widgets, more customisable design touches and a larger Google Maps display that adapts to different screen shapes.
Google Maps is getting Immersive Navigation as well, with 3D buildings, overpasses, terrain, lanes, traffic lights and stop signs. Dolby Atmos is also coming to Android Auto, but only in supported apps and cars. YouTube Music and Spotify will get visual updates for easier in-car use.
Gemini is coming to more Android Auto functions too. Google said it can help with messages, tasks and contextual voice requests while driving.
