Mercedes-Benz EQS gets steer-by-wire as brand marks 140 years

Mercedes-Benz has introduced steer-by-wire for the EQS, making it the first production model from a German carmaker to offer the technology.

The system removes the mechanical link between the steering wheel and front wheels, replacing it with electronic signals, and Mercedes-Benz said it was developed to make steering more precise, lighter and easier in daily use.

In simple terms, the EQS no longer asks the driver to shuffle their hands around the wheel in tighter turns.

Mercedes-Benz said the setup cuts steering effort, helps with manoeuvring and parking, and filters out much of the kickback and vibration that would normally travel through the steering column on rough roads.

Rear-axle steering remains part of the package, helping stability at speed and agility at lower speeds.

The new system also brings a flatter steering wheel design, opening up the driver’s view of the display and making it easier to get in and out.

Because that shape changes how the airbag deploys, Mercedes-Benz said it had to develop a new internal support and folding structure to keep deployment stable and meet its safety targets.

The carmaker added that the steer-by-wire setup has completed more than one million test kilometres across benches, proving grounds and public-road validation.

The EQS continues to offer conventional electromechanical steering as standard, with steer-by-wire available as an option.

The technology arrives as Mercedes-Benz marks 140 years since the birth of the automobile.

As part of that anniversary, the brand is sending three new S-Class sedans across six continents on a “140 Years, 140 Places” drive that runs until October 2026.
