Honda targets 150 kW wireless charging for moving EVs as road trials near

Honda is developing wireless EV road charging for vehicles in motion. It plans to test power transfer of up to 150 kW for large commercial vehicles ahead of public-road trials in Japan from April 2027.

Honda R&D is working with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec on a magnetic-coupling Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT) system. Transmitter units embedded in the road send power to a receiver unit on the vehicle.

Honda has worked on DWPT since 2021, and joint research with the Taisei companies began in 2025.

The group has tested at Taisei’s T-FIELD/SATTE facility and said it has developed the underlying technology. Honda also described its road unit, which combines inverter and coil, as the first of its kind publicly disclosed, based on its own research.

Construction of a new test road at T-FIELD/TAMRA is due to begin in late 2026. Tests will include a loading trial equivalent to one million wheel loads at 49 kN per wheel, charging performance and electromagnetic-field leakage.

Later work will verify output of up to 150 kW and reliability at high speeds.

Public-road demonstrations are planned from Japan’s 2027 fiscal year, which starts on April 1.

The companies would also join NEXCO East’s Tateyama Project on Chiba’s Tateyama Expressway. Honda’s initial focus is logistics and transport, where it expects the technology to reduce how often vehicles must stop to charge.

Honda is not the first to try this. In June 2022, Stellantis showed a Fiat 500 EV running at typical highway speeds without using its battery, on the roughly 1 km Arena del Futuro circuit in Italy. That was a closed test track, not a public road.

In November 2023, Detroit opened a quarter-mile stretch of 14th Street fitted with Electreon charging coils, initially for test pilots.

In October 2025, VINCI Autoroutes and Electreon reported early results from a 1.5 km section of France’s A10 highway, where four prototype vehicles drove in live traffic.

Power peaked above 300 kW and averaged over 200 kW in ideal steady conditions. VINCI said such systems could shrink the batteries heavy vehicles need.

Honda will show its DWPT work at Japan Mobility Show Bizweek from Oct 13 to 16 in Chiba City near Tokyo.
