Audi has become the first carmaker to introduce Spotify’s fully native in-car app, giving drivers direct access to music, videos and other features without connecting a smartphone.
Launched on Oct 21, the app runs on Android Automotive OS and is available through the Audi Application Store in 47 markets.
Unlike earlier versions with simplified interfaces, the new app offers Spotify’s familiar layout and a wider selection of features, including music videos, real-time lyrics, Spotify DJ and Jam.
The latter allows passengers to scan a QR code and add songs to a shared playlist.
There are restrictions, however. Music videos and lyrics are disabled on the central infotainment display while the car is moving, along with sign-in and settings functions.
Drivers can still control playback through voice commands, while passengers in suitably equipped models can watch videos and view lyrics on their own display.
When parked, including during EV charging, the central screen unlocks the full range of features.
The app was developed jointly by Audi, Volkswagen Group software subsidiary Cariad and Spotify.
It is initially available on supported Audi A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron electric models, alongside the A5, Q5 and A6 built on the company’s newer combustion-engine architecture. Eligibility starts from model year 2026.
The upcoming Q7 and Q9 SUVs will also support the app.
Downloading it is free, although users need a Spotify account. Both free and Premium accounts are supported, with an Audi connect package potentially required depending on the vehicle and market.
