BYD has launched the second-generation Seagull electric hatchback in China, bringing major upgrades in charging technology, size and performance while lowering its entry price.
Unveiled on Oct 20 at the Zhengzhou International Circuit, the all-new Seagull is available in five variants priced from 65,900 yuan (RM40,000) to 99,900 yuan (RM61,000).
Eligible buyers also receive a 3,000-yuan (RM1,800) discount under a trade-in promotion.
The biggest technological upgrade is BYD’s Flash Charging system, which the company claims can replenish the battery from 10% to 70% in just five minutes at compatible charging stations.
The technology is offered on the three higher variants, which use a 39.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery delivering a claimed 420 km under China’s CLTC test cycle.
These variants produce 95 kW and 130 Nm, while the two entry-level versions use an 85 kW motor and a 30.1 kWh battery, offering 320 km of CLTC range.
The new Seagull is also substantially larger. At 4,205 mm long, it is 425 mm longer than its predecessor, while its 2,650 mm wheelbase represents a 150 mm increase.
The larger body accommodates five occupants instead of four, with luggage capacity of 380 litres, expandable to 1,380 litres. There is also a 94-litre front boot.
BYD has switched from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive, replacing the previous torsion-beam rear suspension with a multi-link independent arrangement.
A more sophisticated driver assistance package, DiPilot 300, incorporating LiDAR, is available on the flagship variant.
Other upgrades include a redesigned dashboard, improved cabin equipment and heated and ventilated front seats on selected variants.
The Seagull is sold internationally under different names, including Dolphin Surf in Europe and Atto 1 in several South-East Asian markets.
