Maserati plans electric GT and SUV with Huawei tech and China production, says report

Maserati has reportedly settled on plans for two new battery-electric models developed with Huawei and JAC Motors, as parent Stellantis looks for partners to rebuild the Italian luxury brand.

Chinese outlet Future Cars Daily, carried by EET China, said the programme covers a large electric GT and a mid-to-large electric SUV. People familiar with the project said internal discussions currently favour launching the GT first.

The SUV is intended to broaden Maserati’s electric offering around the Grecale Folgore, while the GT would build on the territory occupied by the GranTurismo Folgore.

Huawei would supply key technology, including its Harmony Intelligent Mobility systems, smart cockpit, Qiankun ADS driver assistance and electric-drive hardware.

JAC would handle engineering and manufacturing through its Maextro facilities in Hefei, while Maserati would contribute vehicle design and overseas sales channels, according to the report.

The proposed manufacturing arrangement is unusual. Body-in-white structures would be produced in Hefei before being shipped to Italy, where Maserati plants would install the interiors and carry out vehicle calibration and final production work under a semi-knocked-down, or SKD, system.

The approach is intended to reduce costs while retaining final manufacturing work in Italy. Future Cars Daily said Maserati also wants the programme to make greater use of its Cassino and Modena facilities.

Maserati is reportedly expected to have greater control over overseas distribution, with the Middle East, Italy, France and Germany among the first markets under consideration.

A dual-brand arrangement could see the vehicles sold as Maextro models in China and as Maseratis elsewhere.

The report adds detail to earlier indications of a three-way tie-up. Reuters reported on Sept 4 that Stellantis was in talks with Huawei and JAC over long-term cooperation involving Maserati.

Stellantis acknowledged that it regularly holds discussions with industry players but did not confirm a deal. Huawei and JAC did not comment.

Maserati shipped 7,900 vehicles in 2025, down 30%, while posting an adjusted operating loss of €198 million (RM927 million), and a negative 27.3% margin.

Neither Stellantis, Maserati, Huawei nor JAC has formally announced the two vehicles.
