MG is bringing European production back with a new plant in Galicia, Spain, as the Chinese-owned British brand pushes deeper into the region’s electric and hybrid car market.
The project carries an investment of about €200 million (RM927 million) and is scheduled to start production in 2028, with planned annual capacity of up to 120,000 vehicles.
Spanish reports said the site would be split between the outer port of Ferrol and As Pontes, with Galicia’s regional government declaring it a strategic industrial project to speed up approvals.
MG said the new operation would create more than 2,000 jobs across Europe and cover more than simple final assembly. The facility is planned as an industrial hub combining vehicle research and development, manufacturing, component supply and logistics.
That fits MG’s “In Europe, For Europe” plan, which is aimed at cutting distance between product planning, supply, production and European customers.
It also gives MG a stronger answer to European Union pressure on China-built electric vehicles, after earlier reports linked the Spain plan to the need to reduce exposure to EU tariffs on imported Chinese EVs.
MG UK and Europe managing director William Wang said: “From technological innovation to the localisation of manufacturing and R&D across Europe, supported by a truly global product line-up, MG continues to push the boundaries of what is possible — making advanced technology and sustainable mobility accessible to more people than ever before.”
The move comes as MG continues to broaden its European line-up with battery-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. Recent additions include the MG4 EV Urban, MGS9 Plug-in Hybrid seven-seat SUV, MGS5 EV, MGS6 EV and MG HS Hybrid+.
The Cyberster remains the brand’s halo EV, tying MG’s roadster history to its current electric push.
MG also said it recently delivered its one-millionth vehicle in Europe, helped by more than 1,300 dealer partners across 34 markets. Its parent group has also passed 100 million global customer vehicles.
The Spain move also helps MG with perception. A car built in Europe is easier to sell as part of the European market, not just as another imported Chinese EV with a familiar British badge.
