Chinese automaker FAW has tested an electric-vehicle battery that can raise its state of charge from 10% to 70% in three minutes and 41 seconds.
FAW’s Research and Development Institute said the battery was jointly developed by Hongqi and Zhongqi New Energy, a battery company controlled by the state-owned carmaker. Testing was conducted at an ambient temperature of 25°C.
A longer charging run from 10% to 97% took eight minutes and three seconds, while the peak charging rate reached 12C.
FAW attributed the result to a new fast-charging anode, a low-desolvation-energy electrolyte and changes to the cell’s carbon coating and internal materials. It claimed internal resistance was 15% lower than comparable cells using the same chemistry.
The battery pack also uses liquid cooling and software that adjusts charging power according to cell temperature, voltage and state of charge. FAW said the temperature difference across the pack was kept within 3°C during charging.
However, the company did not disclose the battery’s chemistry, capacity or peak charging power in kW. It also did not identify a production vehicle, charger specification or market-launch date.
Zhongqi New Energy already produces battery cells for Hongqi vehicles, including models based on the brand’s 800V Tiangong electric platform.
