BYD is taking its DM 5.0 plug-in hybrid tech into Europe’s small-car market with the Dolphin G DM-i, a B-segment hatchback that mixes short-trip electric running with long-distance petrol backup.
The model is significant because it is the first BYD developed specifically for Europe, rather than a China-market car adapted for sale there.
It also gives BYD a rare plug-in hybrid play in the supermini class, where many buyers still want compact dimensions but are not ready to rely fully on charging.
BYD has sold more than 8.5 million vehicles using its DM hybrid technology globally, and the European line-up now includes models such as the Atto 2 DM-i, Seal 6 DM-i, Sealion 5 DM-i, Seal U DM-i and Seal 5 DM-i. The Dolphin G DM-i puts that formula into a smaller, more price-sensitive part of the market.
The car uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine rated at 95PS, paired with BYD’s electric hybrid system. Total output rises to 212PS on higher variants, giving a 0-100kph time of 8.3 seconds.
BYD claims up to 105km of electric-only range and 1,040km on a full tank and full battery. Weighted fuel consumption is listed at 1.4 litres/100km, under plug-in hybrid test conditions.
DM 5.0 brings three main upgrades: the petrol engine, thermal control and electric integration.
BYD said the engine now uses a 16:1 compression ratio, intelligent fuel injection, split cooling and variable lubrication.
The electric hybrid system also gets cooling and transmission revisions, along with ultra-thin silicon steel sheets. The thermal system manages the front compartment, cabin and battery together, including direct cooling for the Blade Battery.
Two battery sizes are offered. The Active uses a 7.42kWh Blade Battery for 40km of electric range and 1,019km combined.
Boost, Comfort and Sport move to an 18.3kWh pack for the 105km electric range figure. The larger battery supports 6.6kW AC charging and 39kW DC charging, with a 10-80% top-up quoted at 26 minutes.
The Dolphin G DM-i measures 4,160mm long and 1,825mm wide, with a 2,610mm wheelbase and a 425-litre boot.
Equipment includes a 12.8-inch touchscreen with Google built in, parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, heated seats and steering wheel, 18-inch wheels and Vehicle-to-Load.
European dealers are already taking orders, with first deliveries expected in late summer.
