Mitsubishi will put the ASX VR-e battery-electric SUV on sale in Australia and New Zealand later in 2026, adding a Foxtron-developed EV to its line-up as it expands electrification through outside partnerships.
The small SUV will be supplied to Mitsubishi on an original equipment manufacturer basis by Taiwan’s Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, the EV company backed by Foxconn. An earlier agreement between the companies confirmed that the vehicle would be manufactured in Taiwan by Yulon Motor.
Mitsubishi has yet to disclose battery capacity, motor output, driving range or charging performance in its global announcement.
The ASX badge is familiar in both markets, although the VR-e suffix reaches further back into Mitsubishi history. It takes its inspiration from the Galant VR-4 performance sedan, with the “e” denoting the new model’s electric drivetrain.
Mitsubishi engineers have also carried out local testing and specific suspension tuning for Australian and New Zealand roads. The company said the changes are intended to give the SUV more responsive handling and better road holding.
Aerodynamics play a visible part in the design. An S-duct directs air from the centre of the front bumper across the bonnet, while active grille shutters open and close according to driving conditions to cut drag. Horizontal patterns are repeated across the lighting, C-pillars and wheel design.
The ASX VR-e also shows how Mitsubishi intends to broaden its EV range without developing every battery-electric model itself. The company is using vehicles sourced through its Alliance partners and other manufacturers while keeping development of hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems in-house.
Mitsubishi and Foxtron first announced plans for the Oceania-bound EV in May 2025. At the time, they said it was being developed by Foxtron specifically for supply to Mitsubishi and was scheduled for the second half of 2026.
