Smart Malaysia has launched the smart #5, a new battery-electric SUV aimed at buyers who want more space, range and tech than the brand’s earlier city-focused models.
The D-segment SUV joins the smart #1 and #3 and marks the brand’s push into more adventurous, family-ready electric mobility.
Two versions are on offer: Premium at RM199,800 and Brabus at RM249,800. These are promotional prices (on-the-road without insurance) and valid for the first 300 registered customers.
The Premium is rear-wheel drive, with 0–100kph in 6.5 seconds, the 100kWh pack, up to 590km WLTP range, 800V charging and 22kW AC / 400kW DC capability.
The Brabus model adds a second motor for all-wheel drive, cutting the 0–100kph sprint to 3.8 seconds and adding Launch Mode, Brabus sound tuning, Dinamica seats, red brake calipers and 21-inch Brabus Monoblock Z wheels.
“With the smart #5, we’re introducing a new dimension of electric mobility to Malaysia,” said Pro-NET chief executive officer Zhang Qiang.
“This model is powerful, practical, and unmistakably smart. From its bold silhouette to its intelligent features, the smart #5 is built to future-proof every journey, empowering drivers to explore more, with confidence and style.”
Riding on a 2,900mm wheelbase, the #5 cuts a boxy, upright profile outside and a lounge-inspired feel inside.
The Premium variant comes in Meta Black, Cyber Silver, Pulsar Ruby and Saturn Beige Matte, all with an Eclipse Black roof, while the Brabus variant offers Atom Grey Matte, Meta Black and Digital White with the same contrasting roof. The cabin features soft-touch Nappa leather, oak wood trim and a neat, “tie-clip” dashboard theme.
Comfort touches include a 1.7m² panoramic glass roof, an onboard chiller and double-glazed side glass to cut wind and traffic noise.
The interior focuses on flexibility, with three “bed modes”, 34 storage compartments, a 1,530-litre maximum rear load space and a 72-litre frunk to handle everything from camping trips to weekly shopping.
In front, dual 13-inch OLED screens are paired with a 25.6-inch augmented-reality head-up display and an AMD V2000 chipset, while LEO, a ChatGPT-powered avatar, fronts the voice interface.
A 20-speaker Sennheiser audio system with Dolby Atmos aims to turn the cabin into a rolling cinema.
Safety kit is equally dense. The smart #5 has a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, thanks to a body with 42,000Nm torsional rigidity and 82% high-strength steel content. Seven airbags, smart Pilot Assist, Highway Pilot Assist with Stop & Go and a 360° camera suite round out the active and passive safety package.
Underneath, a 100kWh battery – the largest yet in a smart – delivers up to 590km of WLTP range.
The #5 is also the first smart model in Malaysia with 800V architecture, allowing 10–80% fast charging in a claimed 15 minutes.
Nine driving modes, including five off-road settings, work with an advanced suspension system to balance comfort and control on everything from city streets to light trails.
Ownership is bundled into an “All-Inclusive Premium Ownership” package, including an 8-year/200,000km high-voltage battery warranty, 8-year/150,000km high-voltage component cover, 4-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty, 2-year unlimited mileage parts warranty, 24/7 roadside assistance, a complimentary wallbox, V2L adaptor, accessory pack and three years of in-car data.
The Malaysian debut comes as smart is testing its next product, the smart #6, in China.
Recent spy shots show a mid-size fastback sedan running a plug-in hybrid powertrain on public roads, signalling the brand’s move into electrified sedans alongside its EV SUVs and crossovers.
According to reports, the #6 is expected to share technology with the smart #5 EHD (Electric Hybrid Drive) plug-in hybrid, which pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor via a three-speed hybrid gearbox and offers battery options that can deliver more than 100km of electric range and over 1,400km combined driving range under China’s CLTC cycle.
While final specifications are still unconfirmed, the #6 points to a broader smart line-up that will mix pure EVs and plug-in hybrids in the years ahead.
