Volvo Cars will launch the new XC70 mid-size SUV, its first extended-range plug-in hybrid, offering a pure electric range of up to 200km — the longest of any Volvo plug-in model to date.
The vehicle is built on the company’s newly developed SMA platform, a premium architecture designed to deliver extended electric driving capability alongside a conventional combustion engine.
The XC70 has been tailored initially for the Chinese market, where it will become available for order later this year, with Volvo evaluating additional markets thereafter.
Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars, said the model “marks our strategic entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, a perfect bridge to full electrification,” adding that it allows the firm to “maintain and develop a balanced product portfolio” and respond to local market demands.
Designed to handle most daily journeys on electric power alone, the XC70 combines its 200-kilometre electric range with fast-charging capability that reduces charging downtime.
For longer trips, its efficient combustion engine provides additional flexibility, eliminating concerns over charging availability or refuelling. The vehicle retains Volvo’s reputation for spaciousness and comfort, accommodating passengers and luggage with equal ease.
Styling reflects modern Scandinavian design principles, featuring a robust yet streamlined silhouette defined by a sweeping roofline, sculpted shoulder and seamless body lines.
At the front, a shield-shaped closed grille—borrowed from Volvo’s all-electric models — is paired with an active grille shutter that adjusts to optimise aerodynamics, cabin climate and cooling, thereby enhancing energy efficiency.
The signature “Thor’s Hammer” daytime-running lights have been given a more pronounced appearance, while Matrix LED headlights automatically adapt to road and traffic conditions to improve visibility and safety. At the rear, vertical C-shaped taillights are integrated into the rear glass for a flush, contemporary finish.
The XC70 nameplate revives one of Volvo’s most recognisable models. The original XC70, an estate-car variant of the V70, was noted for its adventurous character and versatility.
The new XC70 continues this legacy in an SUV format, positioned slightly above the XC60 in size and interior space.
Volvo said further technical specifications and market details would be disclosed in the coming months.
