Kia has begun offering its generative AI-powered voice recognition system, AI Assistant, across its European line-up, following its launch in South Korea in July 2024 and in the United States in November 2024.
The system enables natural, conversational engagement with the vehicle, allowing drivers to learn about advanced features and access a broad range of information without resorting to rigid command structures.
AI Assistant interprets intent and context, delivering more accurate responses when users supply additional detail.
It can address both vehicle-specific queries and general requests—for example, “Hey Kia, tell me what you can do,” “I am going camping tomorrow, what items should I take?” or “I am going to meet a Spanish friend tomorrow – are there any important table manners or customs I should be aware of?”
It can also recommend parking spots for city vistas or suggest music to suit a relaxed drive. By saying, “Hey Kia, can you tell me why the sky is blue and explain it in a way that a child will understand?” occupants of all ages can receive tailored explanations.
Owners activate the system via the steering-wheel voice button or wake phrase “Hey Kia.” AI Assistant runs on Kia’s connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) platform and receives continual over-the-air updates to enhance intelligence and add new functions.
Existing European EV3 models built before March 2025 will obtain the feature through OTA upgrades; all new EV3s produced from that date will include it as standard.
In Europe, AI Assistant first appears on the EV3 crossover and will later be extended to models equipped with ccNC, including the EV6, EV9 and Sorento.
It follows its initial deployment on the K4 sedan in the US and the EV3 in South Korea.
