Tesla has introduced a facelifted version of its bestselling Model Y in Malaysia, featuring design upgrades, new bespoke design elements and enhanced functionality, albeit at a higher cost.

The refreshed Model Y was officially launched at Pavilion Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur, where Tesla also operates a showroom.

Available in two variants – Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range – prices start at RM195,450 and RM242,450 respectively, an increase of RM4,450 compared to the previous model. The vehicle can now be ordered via Tesla’s official website, with orders having opened last month in both Malaysia and Singapore. The model is shipped directly from Tesla’s Shanghai plant, which has begun mass production from today.

A limited-edition Launch Series is also on offer, available only until March.

This series incorporates six additional items at no extra charge, including unique design touches such as customised badges on the rear liftgate and doorsill, a puddle light badge and a special charging console design with silver accents.

The Launch Series variant for the Long Range model also benefits from an acceleration boost not available on the standard model.

The interior has been updated with an all-black vegan suede trim, while the exterior now boasts a new ‘Glacier Blue’ paint option, adding a distinctive aesthetic inspired by nature.

Tesla has introduced a range of new design cues on the facelifted Model Y, including a cross car lightbar at the front and an indirect reflective taillight design – both drawing inspiration from the Cybertruck and Cybercab.

The vehicle’s exterior has been completely overhauled to improve aerodynamic efficiency. Newly designed wheels and a rear diffuser help reduce air resistance and enhance stability at high speeds by improving rear-wheel downforce.

Inside, the cabin is notably quieter due to the installation of double-layer glass across all windows, while the panoramic roof has been improved to block ultraviolet rays and reduce heat ingress up to seven times more effectively than before.

Signature features previously seen on the Model 3, such as ambient lighting, ventilated front seats and an 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers, are also present.

The Long Range variant comes equipped with 15 speakers and a subwoofer, whereas the Rear-Wheel Drive model has nine speakers. Rear seats can be adjusted or folded with the press of a button, expanding the storage capacity to over 2,130 litres.

Charging has been made more convenient with Malaysia’s expanding network, including a new V4 Supercharging Station at The Gardens Mall.

The network now comprises 14 Supercharging Stations with 64 Superchargers and 15 Destination Charging Stations with 70 Destination Chargers, enabling drivers to achieve up to 266 km of range in just 15 minutes.

Tesla Malaysia has already received around 300 bookings, with a waiting period extending to May.

The refreshed Model Y, which made its debut in 2020, is currently the only Tesla SUV available in the country, alongside the Model 3 sedan.

Despite maintaining its technological lead, Tesla is under increasing scrutiny for relying on iterative updates to its ageing vehicle lineup rather than introducing a new mass-market model.

This approach has sparked criticism as Chinese competitors rapidly enhance their offerings in efficiency, design, and affordability, potentially challenging Tesla’s longstanding dominance in the electric vehicle market.
