BMW has introduced its latest driving and user experience technology at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, showcasing the near-production version of the new BMW iDrive system.

The centrepiece of this innovation is the *”BMW Panoramic Vision”, a head-up display spanning the entire windscreen, powered by the advanced BMW Operating System X, which will debut in all new BMW models from late 2025.

The BMW Panoramic Vision projects key driving information across the windscreen, from A-pillar to A-pillar, ensuring optimal visibility for all occupants. Essential driving data is displayed in the driver’s line of sight, with personalisation options available for the centre and right-hand sections of the screen.

The new system includes an optional “3D Head-Up Display”, which integrates navigation and automated driving details directly within the driver’s field of vision.

BMW’s latest iDrive system incorporates a central display with matrix backlighting, positioned ergonomically close to the driver, allowing intuitive touch operations.

Information can be seamlessly transferred to the panoramic display, offering up to six customisable widgets. The multifunction steering wheel, featuring illuminated haptic feedback buttons, provides effortless control over key functions without distraction.

According to BMW’s Head of Development, Frank Weber, the Panoramic iDrive builds on the company’s 25-year legacy of innovation in infotainment systems.

He said BMW Operating System X enhances the system’s capabilities, setting a new industry benchmark for driver interaction. Developed in-house and based on Android Open Source Project software, the system offers extensive upgradeability and future-proof functionality.

BMW’s approach blends physical and digital interfaces, with haptic controls for essential functions like wipers and indicators, while infotainment and navigation features rely on touch and voice commands.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, enhanced by large language models, enables natural voice interactions for navigation and system control.

The Panoramic iDrive has undergone extensive user testing, involving over 3,000 participants to refine its usability and personalisation features. Drivers can customise driving dynamics, ambient lighting, and display preferences, ensuring a tailored experience.
