Sime Darby Motors, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, has achieved a significant milestone, selling over 10,000 BYD cars nationwide.
To mark the occasion, the company organised the “BYD Dream Drive Melaka 2024”, a convoy featuring over 60 BYD cars.
The two-day event took participants from the Ara Damansara showroom in Petaling Jaya to Melaka, in celebration of Malaysia and China’s 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Melaka, with its historical ties to China, served as the ideal destination for the event.
During the trip, participants visited Encore Melaka and attended the “Puteri Hang Li Po” musical theatre, which honoured the long-standing ties between the two nations.
The event not only celebrated the sales milestone but also deepened the cultural connection between Malaysia and China.
Sime Darby Motors Southeast Asia managing director Jeffrey Gan credited the strong adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia for this achievement.
He said the strategic partnership with BYD has helped propel the company to its leadership position in Malaysia’s EV market.
BYD launched the Atto 3 SUV in December 2022, marking its entry into Malaysia. This was followed by the launch of the Dolphin hatchback and the Seal sedan. BYD is expected to unveil the M6 electric 7-seat MPV next week. The measured model deployment means BYD will have four electric cars in different bodystyles moving into 2025.
BYD Malaysia managing director Eagle Zhao echoed the sentiment, thanking customers for their trust in the brand and expressing confidence in reaching the next 10,000 car sales milestone in less time.
BYD, now the top EV brand in Malaysia, has focused on expanding its presence.
With 26 showrooms nationwide, including 16 3S centres and 10 1S centres, BYD aims to increase this number to 30 by the end of 2024, ensuring comprehensive service and support for customers.
BYD models are also sold locally through Harmony Auto Group of China in cooperation with Sime Darby Motors.
Separately, Sime Darby Motors issued a statement on Oct 1 to reassure Malaysian BYD customers that the recent recall of the Dolphin and Yuan Plus (aka Atto 3) in China does not affect the Malaysian market.
The recall is limited to vehicles sold within China.
