Bugatti Tourbillion: Making of a new platform

Bugatti has recently introduced its groundbreaking new platform for the Tourbillon, a hyper sports car marking a new era for the brand.

This development is highlighted in the fourth episode of Bugatti’s “A New Era” docuseries, now available on YouTube. The platform, a fresh foundation for the marque’s future, represents the next step in Bugatti’s 115-year legacy of pushing automotive boundaries.

The Tourbillon succeeds Bugatti’s legendary Veyron and Chiron models, which dominated for two decades.

However, Bugatti chief technical officer Emilio Scervo described the new platform as an opportunity to improve on every aspect, from proportions and aerodynamics to driving dynamics. The result is a vehicle more dynamic and emotional than its predecessors.

One of the Tourbillon’s most innovative features is its powertrain, combining a naturally aspirated V16 engine with three electric motors. This setup creates a formidable mix of power and efficiency. The platform allows for optimal integration of technical elements, including the placement of eight radiators at the front to cool both the engine and electrical components efficiently.

A notable engineering achievement is the electric axle behind the luggage compartment, which contains two 250kW motors providing four-wheel drive and torque vectoring. This improves performance by distributing torque between the front wheels as needed.

The heart of the Tourbillon, the V16 engine paired with a rear electric motor, is positioned closer to the driver, improving weight distribution and handling.

The platform also features a centrally placed, T-shaped battery offering 800hp of electric power and a 60km range in electric mode. This battery is structurally integrated into the vehicle’s monocoque, ensuring a balanced centre of gravity. The Tourbillon also boasts a fixed seating position with adjustable pedals and steering, which helps minimise vehicle height and weight.

“What I’m most proud of is how the overall design of the car feels like the work of a single hand,” said Scervo.

“Although many talented contributors were involved, the Tourbillon feels like a complete and holistic product. Just by looking at it, you can sense that it’s not just a collection of parts thrown together; starting from scratch has allowed us to create something cohesive and thoroughly considered, as if crafted by one vision – a truly incomparable Bugatti.”
