Tesla Cybertruck production to wind down by mid-2027 for Cybercab

Tesla will wind down production of the Cybertruck at its Gigafactory Texas around mid-2027, clearing manufacturing capacity for its Cybercab autonomous vehicle.

Chief executive Elon Musk confirmed the decision in a post on X today, marking a major change in direction for the stainless-steel electric pickup that began customer deliveries in November 2023.

The announcement leaves the Cybertruck’s long-term future uncertain. Musk did not specify whether production would end permanently or move elsewhere. The Texas factory is currently its only production site.

The decision follows disappointing sales for a vehicle Musk once expected to reach annual production of 250,000 units.

According to Kelley Blue Book estimates, US Cybertruck sales fell 48% in 2025 to 20,237 units. Sales continued to decline during the first nine months of 2026, dropping 28% from the corresponding period a year earlier.

The angular pickup has also faced repeated recalls, quality-control complaints and pricing changes since its launch. Its unconventional design and stainless-steel bodywork have complicated its appeal beyond a relatively narrow group of buyers.

Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill described the vehicle as an important technology development platform, adding that its engineering would live on through the Cybercab.

Musk subsequently said the existing Cybertruck fleet would remain on the road for a long time.

The Cybercab, a two-seat vehicle designed without conventional driving controls, is central to Tesla’s plans to expand its autonomous ride-hailing business.

Tesla began offering limited paid Cybercab rides in Austin in September, although regulatory questions remain over the vehicle’s compliance with US safety requirements.

The production shift would give Tesla more factory capacity for Cybercab manufacturing as the company increasingly prioritises autonomous vehicles and robotics over conventional passenger vehicle development.
