The new Smart #5’s standout feature is its automotive-grade laser projection light, developed by China’s Appotronics Corp Ltd.
This in-cabin projector turns the vehicle into a mobile entertainment hub, capable of displaying content on a screen up to 233 inches wide from a distance of 2 to 7 metres.
With 1,080 pixel resolution and up to 2,000 lumens of brightness, the projector creates a vivid, cinematic experience, ideal for outdoor settings like camping.
What sets this projection system apart is its adaptability and advanced features.
It includes 10 adjustable brightness levels, automatic focusing, and trapezoidal correction, ensuring sharp and clear images even in challenging environments.
The IP67 dust and water resistance rating, coupled with an electric lens protective cover, enhances the projector’s durability, making it suitable for diverse outdoor conditions.
The laser projector uses ALPD semiconductor laser light source technology, which allows for high-quality visuals while maintaining a compact design.
This technology is not just limited to entertainment; it has expanded into automotive lighting, as showcased by Appotronics’ innovative laser digital headlight.
This headlight integrates multiple functionalities—adaptive high-beam, variable colour temperature, and even a ground information display—into a single, energy-efficient module, significantly reducing overall system cost and enhancing safety and personalisation.
The Smart #5’s laser projection capability embodies a shift towards creating immersive, intelligent cockpit experiences, bridging the gap between luxury and outdoor adventure. It provides users with an improved blend of entertainment and functionality, turning any location into a private cinema.
The #5 made its world premiere in Australia a week ago. It will launch in China later this year followed by Europe in mid-2025 and other markets thereafter.
