It was in early 2022 when the sprawling Gamuda Gardens township in Rawang announced the availability of two BMW i chargers, each able to charge at up to 11kW.
The chargers were free to use for residents and members of the public.
The charging infrastructure there is on the up and up in 2024 with DC fast charging set to complement the AC chargers.
There are now two Kempower DC fast chargers that can charge up four cars at one go.
Installed recently, the DC fast chargers from Gentari are expected to go into service soon, with one Gamuda Gardens official saying as early as April.
Providing fast charging is not cheap and users will have to pay for it. The official said for the time being the BMW AC chargers that were installed two years ago would stay gratis. (NOTE: As of July 2026, the BMW chargers are still there but no longer in operation)
As for the use of the fast chargers, the going rate is RM1.50 to RM1.70 per kWh. We will update you when the information is available. It’s believed the four guns on the Kempower chargers share 200kW.
What’s even more interesting is that the Kempower EV chargers – made by a Finnish company – are intelligent as they support dynamic power sharing. The included video provides a clear picture of what that means.
We first saw the Kempower chargers at the Bangi Golf Club in November 2022.
Slim and compact, Kempower also offers the state of charge through an app, so a user could keep tabs on the charging process while he is off-site.
Also in the past few months, Gamuda Gardens has been laying solar panels on the roofs of its car park to enable the chargers to draw power from the sun as well as the conventional power grid in a hybrid power supply system.
More chargers are in the pipeline. Gamuda Square, a commercial project currently under construction near the township, will also provide electric vehicle charging amenities when it finally opens.
