Volkswagen’s China strategy has taken a decisive step forward with the ID.UNYX 08, a five-metre all-electric SUV filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as the first production model born from its technical alliance with Xpeng.

The vehicle will be built by Volkswagen Anhui, the group’s dedicated new energy joint venture, and effectively serves as a showcase for how Volkswagen intends to localise EVs for China using Chinese-developed platforms and software.

According to the regulatory filing, the ID.UNYX 08 measures 5,000 mm long, 1,954 mm wide and up to 1,688 mm tall, with a 3,030 mm wheelbase, positioning it in the mid- to large-size SUV class.

It adopts a five-seat layout and will be offered in single- and dual-motor configurations.

The rear-driven variant delivers 230 kW, while the dual-motor set-up adds a 140 kW front motor to retain all-wheel drive and higher performance.

Both use lithium iron phosphate battery packs from CATL, with 800-volt architecture enabling fast charging and a claimed CLTC driving range of up to 700 km.

Styling closely follows the earlier ID.EVO concept, giving the ID.UNYX 08 a distinct identity within Volkswagen’s Chinese portfolio.

The SUV features a closed front fascia, slim, angled headlamps, blacked-out A-pillars that create a floating roof effect, hidden door handles and dense-spoke wheels, plus an illuminated Volkswagen badge and full-width rear light bar.

The cabin uses a wraparound cockpit with eco-friendly materials and multiple “ecological expansion” interfaces intended to support digital and lifestyle accessories.

On the technology front, the ID.UNYX 08 is specified with L2++ advanced driver assistance including “parking spot to parking spot” capability for urban and highway use, as well as over-the-air software updates.

A large language model-based voice assistant is planned to enhance in-car interaction, signalling Volkswagen’s intent to match domestic rivals on smart-car features rather than rely solely on brand legacy.

The model expands the ID.UNYX sub-brand alongside the existing coupe SUV and ID.UNYX 06 and 07, while underlining the strategic depth of the Volkswagen–Xpeng tie-up.

Positioned against China’s fast-growing crop of premium battery SUVs, the ID.UNYX 08 is a test of whether a German badge, Chinese platform know-how and aggressive localisation can keep Volkswagen competitive in its most critical EV battleground.
