The eMO-II is the latest rendition of Perodua’s upcoming electric car.

Its latest electric vehicle prototype made its debut at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2024. The vehicle marks the next phase in Perodua’s journey to produce affordable EVs for the Malaysian market, with the production version expected to launch in 2025.

Perodua aims to price the EV between RM50,000 and RM90,000, with a planned production volume of 500 units per month. The company describes the eMO-II (pronounced as M-O-2) as incorporating 21st-century aesthetics with a touch of Malaysian heritage, notably inspired by the traditional “songket” motif integrated into its design.

The project was developed in-house by Perodua’s Research and Development team, with additional expertise from consultants to address the complexities of EV technology.

Perodua president and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad described the development as a “steep learning curve” but expressed confidence in the progress achieved so far.

The eMO-II features a lithium-ion battery with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, alongside an electric motor and inverter sourced from overseas.

Perodua is collaborating with Malaysian companies to address challenges related to EV ownership, such as charging infrastructure and vehicle efficiency, aiming to make EV adoption practical and accessible.

Perodua’s move aligns with broader industry shifts in Malaysia, as the national carmaker seeks to balance its future EV production with its existing combustion-engine lineup.

At KLIMS 2024, Perodua also showcased the Ativa Fuze concept, a modified version of its Ativa model featuring an upgraded infotainment system and rear-seat screens.

The event comes as Proton, Malaysia’s other national carmaker, prepares to launch its e.MAS 7 EV later this month. Proton’s EV, priced from RM120,000, will offer two variants.

KLIMS 2024 is open to the public from Dec 5-11.
