Freelander has released full powertrain and chassis details for the international left-hand-drive Freelander 8, revealing a 460 kW plug-in hybrid SUV with 110 km of electric range.

The Middle East-specification model pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged dedicated hybrid engine with a 34.12 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive.

Combined output peaks at 460 kW and 662 Nm, enough to take the SUV from 0–100 kph in 5.8 seconds.

Freelander claims 110 km of all-electric driving and 886 km of combined range with a full battery and fuel tank. Both figures are quoted on a combined test cycle, although the company has not specified the testing standard in its latest release.

Charging is through an 11 kW AC system or DC fast charging, with the latter taking the battery from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes or less.

There is more to the Freelander 8 than its electrified powertrain. Dual-chamber air suspension works with continuously controlled damping, while maximum ground clearance is 266 mm.

An electronic limited-slip differential and what Freelander calls a Virtual Central Differential Lock distribute torque when grip is poor or the wheels are crossed up over uneven ground.

The Intelligent All-Terrain System has nine settings, comprising seven terrain programmes plus Smart and Expert modes.

Freelander said the SUV can negotiate a 70% gradient, roughly equivalent to 35 degrees, and wade through water up to 900 mm deep under specified test conditions. It has also demonstrated an 800 mm cross-axle test.

The specifications apply to the Middle East version and could differ when right-hand-drive models arrive.

Freelander is starting its overseas rollout in left-hand-drive markets after unveiling the international model in Abu Dhabi on Sept 29. Right-hand-drive and European versions are due later, although timings have yet to be announced.

The SUV will next make its dynamic debut at the Chery International User Summit in Wuhu, China, which runs from Oct 18 to 24.

Freelander is jointly developed by JLR and Chery. JLR owns the name and leads the vehicle’s design through a dedicated Freelander Design Hub, while Chery supplies technology and manufacturing and supply-chain expertise.
