BMW has confirmed that its first fully electric M3 will be built exclusively at its Munich plant, adding a fresh production detail to a model already in development and due to usher BMW M into the Neue Klasse era.

The electric M3 itself is not new. BMW had already confirmed fully electric M models based on Neue Klasse technology, while camouflaged prototypes have been undergoing development testing.

The latest announcement pins down where the production car will be built.

Munich will also produce the new electric BMW i3, making the M3 the second Neue Klasse model assigned to BMW’s historic home plant.

BMW tied the announcement to production of its one-millionth BMW M vehicle.

The milestone car was an M3 finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III, built in Munich and handed over by plant head Peter Weber to BMW M chief Franciscus van Meel.

Van Meel said BMW M would continue expanding its high-performance range around Neue Klasse technology, including fully electric models, while retaining the division’s focus on road, track and everyday usability.

The current-generation M3 has been built in Munich since 2020, giving the plant a direct link with the model before its transition into the electric era.

BMW is investing around €650 million (RM2.98 billion) to convert the site for EV-only production. The programme includes a new body shop, assembly facilities and logistics areas covering roughly a third of the plant.

The conversion is being carried out while production continues, with BMW also introducing more digitalised manufacturing processes and closer integration between development teams and suppliers.

From 2027, Munich will build only fully electric BMW models, making the coming electric M3 one of the key performance cars in the plant’s next phase.
