Alpine has given its clearest look yet at the third-generation A110, using a full-size design sculpture to preview the shape of its next electric sports car.
The sculpture does not show the production car outright. Instead, a tightly draped blue surface exposes the basic proportions, stance and several styling themes that Alpine saidwill carry into the new A110.
Those include a V-shaped front end, dual light signature, shark-nose profile, lowered tail, teardrop-shaped cabin and pronounced wheel arches.
Alpine saidthe design will retain the visual link to both the original Berlinette and the current A110.
One of the more unusual inspirations is the Concorde. The veil is meant to evoke the instant the supersonic aircraft breaks the sound barrier, with the resulting tension and airflow influencing the sculpture’s surfaces.
Underneath, the next A110 will use Alpine’s new APP, or Alpine Performance Platform. The architecture was demonstrated publicly in July by the A110 Future development mule at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
APP uses an 800V electrical system with two battery packs split between the front and rear of the car rather than one large pack under the floor.
Alpine said the arrangement helps preserve a low seating position and an overall height similar to today’s A110. Battery energy is split 25:75 front to rear.
The development mule also uses two rear electric motors with Alpine Active Torque Vectoring 2.0 and Wheel Slip Torque Control. The motors use 800V silicon-carbide inverters and can spin at up to 21,500rpm.
Motor1 said Alpine is targeting more than 547km of range for the electric A110. It also reported that the APP architecture has been engineered so a combustion powertrain could still be accommodated if Alpine decides to offer one later.
The sculpture will appear at the Paris Motor Show in October.
Production of the third-generation A110 will remain at Dieppe, France.
