Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled the Ioniq 9, a three-row all-electric SUV designed to redefine EV standards with advanced technology, spacious interiors, and innovative design. The SUV, positioned as Hyundai’s flagship electric vehicle, will debut in Korea and the United States in the first half of 2025, followed by launches in Europe and other global markets.
Expansive and flexible Interior
The Ioniq 9 offers exceptional space for up to seven occupants, with features like Relaxation Seats that recline fully for added comfort. Its innovative Swiveling Seats allow second- and third-row passengers to face each other, enhancing interaction during stops.
A flat floor enables seamless configurations, while the Universal Island 2.0 console provides ample storage and accessibility, moving up to 190 mm to cater to passengers’ needs.
Cargo capacity is generous, with up to 1,323 litres available when third-row seats are folded, and a front trunk adds an additional 52 to 88 liters depending on drivetrain options. Sustainability is a key focus, with eco-friendly materials like recycled PET fabric, bio-paint, and leather alternatives used extensively throughout the interior.
Advanced technology and performance
Built on Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the Ioniq 9 features a 110.3 kWh battery offering a 620 km range (WLTP) on the RWD model with 19-inch wheels. The vehicle supports 800V ultra-fast charging, reaching 10-80% in just 24 minutes.
Three powertrain options are available:
– Long-Range RWD: 160 kW motor with a 620 km range.
– Long-Range AWD: Dual-motor setup with a total output of 230 kW.
– Performance AWD: 320 kW output, accelerating 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.
Aerodynamic enhancements, including a dual-motion active air flap system, contribute to a low drag coefficient of 0.259 Cd.
Safety and driver assistance
The Ioniq 9 prioritizes safety with 10 airbags, including third-row pre-tensioners, and a reinforced body structure for optimal collision energy distribution.
It comes equipped with Hyundai’s latest ADAS suite, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Safe Exit Warning.
Cutting-edge features
A panoramic curved display integrates a 12-inch instrument cluster and infotainment screen, supported by advanced AI-enabled voice controls and Hyundai AI Assistant.
The vehicle supports over-the-air software updates, a digital key system, and high-capacity USB-C ports powered by the main battery.
The SUV also offers innovative features like Active Noise Control, terrain-specific drive modes, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities for powering external devices.
Optional amenities include a 14-speaker BOSE sound system, UV-C sterilizer, and enhanced climate systems for leisure activities like car camping.
Futuristic exterior design
The Aerosthetic design blends aerodynamic innovation with sophisticated styling, featuring Parametric Pixel lighting and a flowing roofline.
New materials, including aluminum fenders, reduce weight and enhance efficiency. Wheel options range from 19 to 21 inches, while 16 exterior color choices allow for personalization.
Launch and availability
Hyundai plans to release detailed specifications closer to the Ioniq 9’s market launch in 2025. Price should be around the price range of the Kia EV9, which is priced from US$55,000 (RM246,000),
It was unveiled at the 2024 LA Auto Show, which runs from Nov 22-Dec 1.
Production is set to start in Q1, 2025, and the SUV will go on sale in Q2. The Ioniq 9 is expected to qualify for the full US$7,500 federal tax credit thanks to US assembly and battery sourcing.
