Honda has become the first company to receive the FIA Road Safety Index’s new five-star rating in its products and services category, following an assessment covering most of the carmaker’s global motorcycle and automobile business.
The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) expanded the index from three to five stars this year, adding tougher assessments for planning, safety-performance monitoring and safety culture across products, services and supply chains.
Honda had already become the first automotive company to receive the previous maximum three-star rating in February 2025, when the assessment covered its operations in Japan.
For the latest evaluation, Honda widened the scope to 17 countries accounting for more than 90% of its global motorcycle and automobile sales. Malaysia was among the markets assessed, alongside Japan, the United States, China, India and several European and Asian countries.
The FIA said Honda scored highly for its long-term safety strategy, management involvement, tracking of traffic deaths and injuries, safety governance and use of advanced technologies. It also examined how safety measures are applied across the company’s operations and how progress is monitored.
The index separately provides a supply-chain rating covering activities ranging from procurement and production to delivery of finished products.
Honda Motor assistant vice-president and general manager of Traffic Safety Promotion Operations Mikihito Kojima said the index helped companies identify where more work was needed.
“The FIA Road Safety Index brings visibility to corporate road safety efforts, and has given us a clearer view of where we stand today,” he said.
Honda is targeting a 50% reduction by 2030 in traffic-collision fatalities involving its motorcycles and cars per 10,000 units sold, compared with 2020.
Its longer-term goal is zero traffic-collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles worldwide by 2050.
The five-star recognition was presented at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza during the Formula One Italian Grand Prix in September.
