OpenAI has added ChatGPT support to Apple CarPlay, giving users a way to speak to the assistant from the car’s infotainment screen rather than picking up the phone.
It works on supported iPhones running iOS 26.4 or later, provided both the handset and the ChatGPT app are updated. OpenAI said the feature is available worldwide across all ChatGPT plans.
Getting started is straightforward enough. Once an iPhone is connected to a car with Apple CarPlay, users open the ChatGPT app in CarPlay, begin a new voice chat, wait for the status to change from “Connecting” to “Listening”, and start talking.
OpenAI also said users can pick up earlier conversations or continue chats inside projects directly from the CarPlay screen.
The feature does have guardrails. ChatGPT in CarPlay cannot tap into maps, vehicle data or live location. It also cannot control the car or work across other apps such as Maps, Mail or Slack.
OpenAI said the experience is built around voice use, and advised users to get it ready before setting off rather than handling the device on the move.
There is also a handy extra for people who use voice often. On iPhone, ChatGPT can be set to open straight into voice mode when launched in CarPlay.
