Michelin is giving more attention to summer tyres, still the biggest part of the global market, with two new ranges built around what modern EVs and performance cars now need.

The new Michelin Primacy 5 Energy and Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Energy are now official, with the French tyre maker selling them as tyres that combine low rolling resistance, solid grip, longer life and sharper responses.

That is what carmakers now want from a tyre. EVs in particular put more strain on tyres.

They need lower energy loss to help range, enough grip to handle instant torque, and durability good enough to cope with extra weight. Michelin said both new ranges are already approved by major vehicle manufacturers, with the Primacy 5 Energy alone already selected by about 20 global brands for more than 50 new models still being developed.

The Michelin Primacy 5 Energy is the less sporty of the pair. Michelin said it carries a triple-A EU label rating for wet grip, rolling resistance and noise, while also claiming best longevity in its European segment.

The company claimed it can brake shorter than its predecessor, cut fuel use, stretch EV range and lower noise, with 33 sizes available from 16 to 19 inches.

Then there is the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Energy, which is for drivers who still care how a car turns in.

Michelin said it uses Dynamic Response Technology, an Adaptive Grip Compound and energy-focused shoulder compounds to deliver grip, precision and lower rolling resistance. Nineteen sizes from 19 to 21 inches are available.

One of the bolder bits in Michelin’s launch material is the all-electric Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX endurance run.

Michelin said a tailor-made Pilot Sport 5 Energy helped the electric concept cover the equivalent of Earth’s circumference at 300kph in under eight days.
