US-based automotive software and data company Solera has previewed an AI-supported workshop concept that uses augmented reality and smart eyewear to deliver repair information directly to technicians as they work.
Shown at Automechanika Frankfurt, the “Digital Workshop of the Future” concept combines technical data, diagnostics and repair instructions in a hands-free workflow aimed at helping workshops handle increasingly complex ICE, hybrid and electric vehicles.
During the demonstration, technicians worked with an EV corner module supplied by LKQ while repair data was displayed through smart eyewear. Solera said the system can provide step-by-step procedures, specifications and diagnostic information without requiring technicians to leave the vehicle.
An earlier prototype was also trialled with the LKQ Academy, LKQ Europe’s technician training programme covering areas including diagnostics, electronics, hybrid technology and high-voltage EV systems.
The workflow is built around Solera’s Autodata AI Advisor. After identifying a vehicle, the system can generate a repair quote based on service history, labour time and parts availability before guiding technicians through inspection, diagnosis and repair.
If additional work is needed, customers can receive a notification containing photographs and a cost estimate for approval. Once repairs are completed, a digital report can be sent with photo and video documentation.
Solera said the concept is intended to address both the shortage of skilled technicians and the growing volume of model-specific repair information required by modern workshops.
