Hyundai Mobis has started mass production of electric-vehicle drive systems at a new factory in Nováky, Slovakia, its first European plant for the component.

The facility can produce up to 280,000 Power Electric, or PE, systems a year. Each combines an electric motor, inverter and reduction gear into a single drive unit.

Hyundai Mobis invested about 250 billion won (RM742 million) in the project. The site covers 106,000 square metres in the Trencín Region, with 8,500 square metres of floor space housing production lines for motor stators, inverters and other components.

The opening ceremony on Sept 2 was attended by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and other government officials.

Nováky becomes Hyundai Mobis’ third electrification production base in Europe, after battery system assembly operations in the Czech Republic and Spain. It is intended to supply Hyundai Motor and Kia as well as other carmakers.

Slovakia also hosts vehicle production by Kia, Volkswagen, Stellantis and Volvo, putting Hyundai Mobis close to several prospective customers.

The supplier wants a larger share of business beyond Hyundai Motor and Kia. Its target is for global customers to account for 40% of revenue by 2033.

President and CEO Lee Gyu Suk said Nováky would be developed as an important European base for the company’s EV-component business.

Hyundai Mobis also operates electrification production sites in South Korea, the United States and Indonesia.
