BYD has launched its Racco electric kei car in Sri Lanka, its first export market after Japan, with Macau next in line as the Chinese carmaker expands into right-hand-drive markets.
The Racco made its Sri Lankan debut on Oct 9 through authorised distributor John Keells CG Auto (JKCG Auto), with simultaneous launch events in Colombo, Kandy and Galle.
The compact four-seater is aimed at urban motorists, families and small businesses seeking lower running costs.
It is being advertised by BYD Sri Lanka at an introductory price of 8.75 million Sri Lankan rupees (RM108,000), valid until the end of November. Earlier reports by Sri Lankan news outlets put its launch price at 11.45 million rupees (RM141,000). Tiencars has reached out to the distributor for clarification.
JKCG Auto has set a target of selling 3,000 Racco units over the next 12 months. The vehicle is available through BYD’s showroom network covering 10 Sri Lankan cities.
The Racco was developed specifically for Japan’s kei car segment, which imposes strict limits on vehicle dimensions and power output.
It measures 3,395mm long and 1,475mm wide, with a tall body and sliding rear doors to maximise passenger space within its compact footprint.
The electric microcar uses a 47kW motor and offers a driving range of up to 320km under Japan’s WLTC testing cycle, depending on battery specification.
Launched in Japan in July, the Racco has attracted more than 2,000 orders there, according to previously reported BYD figures.
BYD is also preparing to introduce the model in Macau, where bookings have already opened. The company has not confirmed an official launch date for the territory.
The expansion marks BYD’s effort to extend the appeal of its Japan-developed electric kei car to other right-hand-drive markets.
