General Motors joins OpenAI cyber defence push as cars get more connected

General Motors (GM) has joined OpenAI and more than 100 organisations calling for stronger cyber defences as cars increasingly depend on cloud links, over-the-air updates and artificial intelligence.

The joint open letter, published by OpenAI, warns that more capable AI models will make cyberattacks more common and harder to counter.

It urged organisations to fix high-risk weaknesses, strengthen access controls and authentication, and use AI to help defenders close vulnerabilities.

The issue is increasingly relevant inside GM vehicles.

More than 4.5 million can receive over-the-air system updates, with roughly two million more added each year.

GM’s next-generation computing architecture, due in 2028 with the electric Cadillac Escalade IQ, will link propulsion, steering, braking, infotainment and safety systems.

GM claims a 1,000-fold increase in bandwidth and 35-fold gain in AI performance over its previous systems.

Google Gemini is also reaching connected GM cars.

Around four million 2022-and-newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles in the US were identified as eligible, and GM was demonstrating the assistant in a Chevrolet Blazer EV SS by August.

GM said it continues to invest in cybersecurity teams, tools and industry partnerships. It warned that stolen account credentials can expose remote vehicle controls, provides multi-factor authentication and operates a vulnerability-disclosure programme.

GM’s participation also sends a signal to other automakers. As app controls, cloud services, AI assistants and automated-driving functions spread, cybersecurity is becoming part of vehicle engineering rather than simply an IT concern.

Reuters noted that the Five Eyes intelligence alliance had warned AI could fundamentally alter the cyber-threat landscape, while the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has faced funding and staffing cuts.

The automotive link extends beyond GM. Other signatories include Visa and Mastercard in mobility payments; AWS and Microsoft in connected and software-defined vehicles; and suppliers AMD, Arm, Broadcom and Micron.
