SEAT & Cupra has started series assembly of battery systems at Martorell, bringing the plant a step closer to building the electric Cupra Raval this summer.
The battery packs assembled there will also go into the Volkswagen ID. Polo, the other small EV due to be built at the same site.
SEAT & Cupra said the 64,000 sq m battery assembly plant can turn out 1,200 battery systems a day, or 300,000 a year, which works out to one every 45 seconds.
The finished packs are then moved automatically over a 600-metre bridge to the vehicle production line. The facility also uses 11,000 solar panels, said to supply about 70% of the electricity needed for battery assembly.
At the centre of the battery system is Volkswagen Group’s Unified Cell approach, paired here with cell-to-pack construction.
SEAT & Cupra said the “E Box”, effectively the control unit for the battery, is built at its El Prat Components plant, which has shifted from manual gearbox production into EV parts.
Martorell is being reshaped into a more flexible plant that can build electric, hybrid and combustion models, while Spain is being positioned as a bigger hub for Volkswagen Group’s smaller EVs.
