Audi revives A2 name for new entry-level EV

Audi is bringing back the A2 name, this time for a new compact electric model called the A2 e-tron, due to make its debut in autumn 2026.

Announced at Audi’s Annual Media Conference 2026, the new A2 e-tron will be the brand’s entry-level EV in the compact class.

Audi said it will be built in Ingolstadt, a move that also ties the car closely to the company’s German base as it pushes ahead with its wider electric transition.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner pitched the car as a more accessible way into the brand’s electric range, saying buyers want EVs that work in everyday life. That gives a fairly clear clue about where this model is aimed: urban buyers, younger customers and anyone who wants an Audi EV without stepping straight into the bigger, pricier end of the line-up.

The name is not random either. It deliberately nods to the original Audi A2, the lightweight MPV-like hatch sold from 1999 to 2005, a car that built a reputation for efficiency long before EVs became mainstream.

Audi is now trying to carry that idea into the electric age, although this new version is expected to take a more crossover-like shape rather than copy the old car outright.

A first design sketch released by the company only shows the silhouette, so for now Audi is keeping the finer details under wraps.

The A2 e-tron also slots into a broader model push at Audi. The company said it will continue refining both ends of its range in 2026, with the upcoming Q9 set to cover the larger end of the market while the A2 e-tron opens the door at the other end.
