Mercedes-Benz has introduced its all-new GLB, pitching the electric compact SUV as a “versatile everyday hero” with space for up to seven and serious long-distance range.

The GLB arrives as a five- or seven-seater and is clearly targeted at young families and people who are forever hauling kids, friends and sports gear.

A sliding second-row bench, optional third row and a generous boot mean it can swallow everything from moving boxes to a full holiday load. There is even a front boot, or frunk, offering 127 litres of extra space, enough for a crate of drinks or a small tent.

Two electric variants lead the launch, while hybrids will come later.

The GLB 250+ with EQ Technology and the more powerful GLB 350 4Matic with EQ Technology use an 85kWh lithium-ion battery running on an 800-volt system. In its most efficient form, the rear-drive GLB 250+ delivers up to 631km of WLTP range, while the dual-motor 350 4MATIC serves as the performance flagship with 260kW and all-wheel drive.

Fast charging is a major selling point. Mercedes said the GLB can add up to 260km of range in around 10 minutes at DC stations capable of 320kW. AC charging at up to 22kW is also available.

A new Electric Drive Unit claims battery-to-wheel efficiency of about 93%, helped by a two-speed transmission on the rear axle and aggressive energy recuperation under braking.

On the road, the GLB promises a blend of comfort and control thanks to a newly developed multi-link rear axle and optional adaptive damping.

The 4Matic versions gain a dedicated Terrain mode, a “Transparent Bonnet” camera view for rough tracks and a towing capacity of up to two tonnes, enough for a large caravan.

Inside, the cabin is a big step up in tech.

A floating MBUX Superscreen stretches across the dash, backed by the new MB.OS operating system and the latest MBUX with AI-driven virtual assistant, Google-based navigation and over-the-air update capability.

Safety kit includes the new MB.DRIVE driver assistance suite, a centre airbag and a strengthened body structure designed to set the benchmark in the segment.
