Great Wall Motor (GWM) recently released a teaser image of its first supercar that it said would rival Ferrari.

Its chairman, Wei Jianjun, posted the photograph on the Weibo social media platform to mark the automaker’s 35th anniversary.

The photograph released on July 23 showed Wei alongside senior executives, standing next to a vehicle draped in black.

Its long body, sloping bonnet line, low beltline and pronounced wide fenders hint at a rear-mounted engine layout, while large air vents ahead of the rear wheels suggest substantial cooling requirements

Great Wall Motor chief technology officer Wu Huixiao has stated the new model would feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain anchored by a self-developed 4.0-litre V8 engine.

The engine was unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show in April and is set to be coupled with electric drive components, though detailed performance figures remain undisclosed

Work on the supercar began in 2021 under an internal project code-name “BG”.

At the start of the year, GWM’s board approved the creation of a standalone luxury brand named Zixin Qiche, also known as Confidence Auto, with the trademark officially filed with China’s intellectual property authorities that month.

Wu said GWM has been working on the supercar project for the past five years, and that its reveal was delayed by the need for rigorous cost-control measures.

In response to comparisons with Ferrari’s SF90, Wu claimed the GWM supercar would surpass it in performance, adding that the company is still gaining expertise by studying industry veterans.”

Use of cutting-edge materials is seen as vital, with Wu emphasising that incorporating a carbon-fibre interior is essential, despite acknowledging the hurdles China’s automotive sector still faces in mastering this technology.

The supercar’s concealed form suggests an aerodynamic profile with a long wheelbase and rear-engine packaging

Great Wall Motor positions its forthcoming supercar to rival both established performance marques and domestic competitors.

The battery-electric Yangwang U9 from BYD delivers 1,287hp and 1,680Nm of torque from four electric motors, accelerating from 0–100kph in 2.36 seconds, and starts at 1.68 million yuan (RM992,000). GWM’s model is expected to carry a price tag above 1 million yuan (RM591,000)

In the first half of 2025, Great Wall Motor sold 569,789 vehicles, up 1.8 percent year-on-year, predominantly SUVs and pickups under its Haval, Wey, Tank and Ora marques.
