Come November, another electric vehicle (EV) will add more diversity to the EV range offered in Malaysia.
Unsurprisingly, it’s another car from China.
Ahead of its October launch, the Dongfeng Box EV is being previewed in Malaysia.
The Malaysian rollout of the electric hatchback is also the first time a right-hand drive version of the model is being shown globally.
It will be imported and distributed by Central Auto Distributors (CADB), a subsidiary company under Pekema (Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association of Malaysia), which represents bumiputra parallel importers.
Initial units will be fully imported (CBU), with local assembly (CKD) planned under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NexV Manufacturing based in Rembau , Negri Sembilan.
The B-segment model is based on Dongfeng’s Quantum Architecture S3 platform. The Box will be sold in two versions: the base E2 and the higher-spec E3.
Both versions are powered by a 70kW electric motor in front, producing 95 PS/94hp and 160Nm of torque, with a top speed of 140kph. The motor in both is powered by a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery.
The E2 features a 31.45 kWh battery providing a range of up to 330km, while the E3 comes with a larger 42.3 kWh battery, offering up to 430km of range.
DC fast charging from 30% to 80% takes around 30 minutes. The E3 also supports AC charging at 6.6 kW, double the rate of the E2.
On the outside, the Box exudes a modern, rounded aesthetic, with features like frameless windows and pop-out door handles. Inside, the cabin offers a 12.8-inch touchscreen, quilted faux leather upholstery, and a unique drawer in place of a traditional glovebox.
Safety features include Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Both versions get only two airbags.
CADB aims to sell 1,000 units in 2024 and 3,000 units the following year.
Pricing is expected to be competitive, targeting rivals like the BYD Dolphin and Neta V, at around the RM100,000 range.
CADB said it also plans to launch additional Dongfeng models in the future, and open 10 new sales outlets, including some in East Malaysia, equipped with charging facilities.
