Proton is set to provide some updates on its first electric car, come Aug 2.
The upcoming electric vehicle, known as the e.MAS, will tap Geely again for a source car to be rebadged as its own.
The vehicle could be named e.MAS7, based on recent trademark filings by Proton.
A teaser image of the e.MAS, featured in the media invite for the event, closely resembles Geely’s Galaxy E5, which is set to launch in China this August.
The Galaxy E5 is already available for pre-sale in China, priced between RMB 123,000 and 157,000 (around RM78,000 to RM99,000).
An educated guess would put the e.MAS model at around RM100,000 to RM150,000. This pricing positions Proton’s entry in a highly competitive market segment.
The Galaxy E5 is built on Geely’s GEEA 3.0 platform and features advanced cell-to-body integration (CTB). It is powered by the Galaxy 11-in-1 intelligent electric motor, delivering 160 kW (218 hp) and enabling acceleration from 0 to 100kph in 6.9 seconds. The SUV will be available in five versions, all equipped with the same powertrain.
A notable feature of the Galaxy E5 is its Aegis Short Blade battery, which boasts a lifespan of 1 million kilometres and is designed to withstand extreme conditions, including rifle shots.
The vehicle offers two battery options: 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh, providing a range of 440km and 530km, respectively. However, these figures are based on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), and the actual range of the rebadged Proton is expected to be lower at 350km to up to 420km.
Proton announced the e.MAS sub-brand on June 12 and said five electric models would be produced in the coming years.
