The Transport Ministry says it is finalising a new road tax framework for electric vehicles (EVs), with an official announcement expected to come in April.
Minister Anthony Loke the road tax for EVs would be lower than that for vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE) as part of an initiative to promote EV adoption.
“The main hurdle was finding a way to compare engine sizes between ICE vehicles and EVs, he said after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Warisan Tan Chong Automotif (M) Sdn Bhd and Guangzhou Automotive Group (GAC) Motor International Co. Ltd in Kuala Lumpur today.
Loke also said newly-registered electric vehicles (EVs) would use a dedicated number plate series. However, current owners are given the option to keep their existing plates.
In the long run, the use of a dedicated number plate series would make it easier to identify EVs in case of an accident as such cars required a different way of dealing with them, said Loke.
Under the MoU, both parties would explore the feasibility studies for two new vehicle assembly projects in Malaysia.
