Leapmotor has released camouflaged images of its new Lafa 5 hatchback ahead of its world premiere at IAA Mobility in Munich on Sept 8.

The pictures were shared by a senior executive on Chinese social media, following earlier teasers on Sept 1 that confirmed the model’s name and show debut.

The Lafa 5, previously known by the codename B05, is positioned as a compact battery-electric hatchback for global markets in a segment that includes the Volkswagen ID.3, MG4, BYD Dolphin and Nio Firefly.

The Lafa 5 adopts Leapmotor’s current design language with curved headlamps linked by an LED light bar, a closed front fascia with a lower air intake and a millimetre-wave radar in the bumper.

The profile shows a smooth bonnet line and retractable door handles. At the rear it features pronounced haunches, a roof spoiler and a full-width tail-light.

Some teaser material showed a roof-mounted LiDAR, while other images did not, indicating availability may vary by variant. The model is built on the LEAP 3.5 modular architecture, which the B10 crossover also uses.

Leapmotor said the Lafa 5 is a wide-bodied, sporty hatch aimed at younger buyers worldwide.

The company’s current China range comprises the T03, B10, B01, C01, C10, C11 and C16. The T03, B01 and B10 are sold only as battery-electric vehicles, while the C-series also offer extended-range versions.

Backed by Stellantis, Leapmotor has accelerated its international plans over the past year.

From January to August 2025 the brand sold 328,859 vehicles globally.

In August alone it delivered 57,066 units, its second month above 50,000, up 88.31% year on year and 13.84% month on month.

Company executives said the Lafa 5 will be a key model for overseas markets following its Munich unveiling.
